Al Fujairah: The final of the Chinese 8 Ball event of the 1st Asian Billiard Sports Championship ended up being an all-Chinese affair with Chu Bingjie and Meng Fanyu going head-to-head in Al Fujairah on Saturday, October 1. In the end, the 22-year-old Bingjie got the better of his compatriot with his 9-6 victory to lift the trophy after a keenly contested match played at the expansive hall of the Concorde Al-Fujairah Hotel. That the Chinese duo will end up meeting in the final was no surprise to every followers of the tournament hosted by the UAE as they blazed through the qualifying and knockout stages with ease, leaving a “bruised and battered” opponents in their wake as they set sights on the coveted trophy. For Bingjie, the 2015 CBSA World 9-Ball champion, the final match came on the back of victories against Saif al Shamsi of the UAE and Iran’s Takhti Zarekani in the quarters and the semi-finals respectively. The Beijing-born player defeated Shamsi 7-2 while he edged Zarekani to the final with a 9-7 margin. Fanyu, meanwhile, eclipsed Mohammadali Pordel of Iran and Saudi Arabia’s Abdulrahman Alammar 7-6 and 9-4 respectively to set up the final showdown against his compatriot. Qatar’s representative at the event Bashar Abdulmajeed had a fine run up till the quarters where he was eventually stopped in his tracks (7-4) by Zarekani, who eventually lost to the champion in the semis. The Al Fujairah event is the maiden edition of the 11-event tournament which was organized to bring together all billiard sports under the same room in a continental contest.
