AL FUJAIRAH: China emerged champions of the 9 Ball Pool Double event of the ongoing 1st Asian Billiard Sports Championship being held in Al Fujairah in the UAE after comprehensively defeating Saudi Arabia 11-4 in the final on Wednesday. The path to the final was paved for the Chinese team after their 11-6 defeat of Hong Kong in the semi-final while the Saudis booked their place on the back of their 11-8 trashing of the UAE, the host country. The Chinese team anchored by the dynamic duo of 27-year-old Wu Jiaqing and Han Haoxiang, 26, left no one in doubt of their intentions right from the beginning of the best of 21 game as they came out smoking with an easy win in the first frame. The Saudi team, consisting of Abdulrahman Alammar and Abdullah Alshammari, temporarily got back into the fray by leveling up in the second frame but the men from Beijing reasserted their authority by taking the next four before the Saudis made it 5-2 at the seventh. Just as it seems the Saudis were getting back into reckoning, the Chinese jolted them back to reality by winning the next four frames to make it 9-2. A subsequent double from the Saudis, however counted for nothing in the long run as the Chinese emphatically crushed the hope of any late surge by the Saudis after easily overrunning them in the next two frames to end the encounter as a no contest with a comprehensive 11-4 win. In all, 17 countries including Bahrain, China, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Maldives, Qatar, Vietnam, Yemen, Palestine and the hosts United Arab Emirates participated in the competition.
